what kind of blending in photoshop can I use to blend an image with its background?

  If the image has less colors, you can try using the eyedropper tool in the color chooser to detect the major color of the image. Then make that particular color that background. Also use a fading-edge, like the 100 px one, to erase off the edges of the image.

That's what I do.

If the image has lots of colors, you can try erasing the edges of the image with that kind of brush and then adorn it with some brushes around.
